About the end of the Soviet Union
Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991. The next day, December 26, the Supreme Soviet voted the country out of existence.
The republics that had made it up, from Russia and Ukraine to Kazakhstan, became independent countries. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had already left that September.
