About the Declaration of Independence
The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, two days after it voted for independence from Great Britain on July 2.
July 4 has been celebrated as the birthday of the United States ever since. The colonies already used the Gregorian calendar, which Britain adopted in 1752, so the count needs no correction.
